Mission and History
Girl Friday Productions’ mission is to inspire audiences and provide career
development for artists via outstanding, actor-driven theatrical productions
that illuminate the human condition. A two-year old collaborative led by two
established woman artists of the Twin Cities small theatre scene - Kirby
Bennett and Natalie Diem - Girl Friday produced a readers’ theatre double
bill of Love Letters and Hate Mail in February 2004 and the critically
acclaimed An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf in July 2005. Our name -
Girl Friday - was chosen to reflect the spirit in which we are coming
together, one of dedication and collaboration, and to turn on its head the
traditional sexist connotation of the phrase. Girl Friday Productions seeks
to remain open to as many artists as possible, with a particular emphasis on
providing opportunities for women. While keeping a minimal structure, we
expect that our key partners will change and grow based upon the projects we
are considering, collaborator interests, and funding needs.
We have learned that bringing together the right combination of talents and
text is a true joy. Our Town offers the perfect opportunity for us to
undertake new artistic challenges, increase artist participation, and
broaden our audience. Like Empty Plate, Our Town features the signature
qualities of a Girl Friday production: solid literature, humanity,
relevance, and stimulating theatricality
